Do I Need to Replace My Furnace’s Blower Motor?

Do I need to replace my furnace blower motor
A broken heating system is the last thing you don’t want during the winter. If your furnace can’t meet your home’s heating demand or manifests some strange behavior, then something’s wrong with your unit or its components. A defective blower motor is usually the main culprit why your heating system won’t work the way it should.

What is Blower Motor?

The blower motor is an essential component of your furnace which is responsible for transporting the air to your heating system. It delivers the heat through the ductwork then out through the air vents.   Here are signs that you need to replace the blower motor:

Weak Airflow

You know it’s time for a replacement if the blower motor is working harder and longer to push the air through the air ducts. There are several reasons why this happens, such as dust and dirt buildup, faulty capacitor, and worn out motor. In this case, it’s best to call an HVAC technician to determine the root cause of the problem and fix it right away.

No Airflow

If there’s no warm air coming out from your heating equipment, then it’s an indication of a problem in the blower motor. In cases where repairs won’t work, replacing the motor would be the best solution. In the absence of airflow, you may want to look at these possible causes:  fan control issue, bad relay or battery, and defective thermostat.

High Energy Bills

The blower motor consumes a lot of energy to produce enough heat that you need. If it’s old and out of order, it will work harder to meet your desired output, causing your energy bills to soar high. Make sure to have it checked by an expert HVAC contractor.

Strange Sounds

Your furnace shouldn’t work loudly, so when you noticed odd and loud sounds from your system, it’s a sign of a faulty blower motor. Squealing or screeching sounds could mean that the motor has a problem with the bearing or the belt. You may need to lubricate the bearings or replace the belt. Other sounds like banging, loud, and rattling are indications of broken or loose parts.
